How well is your furniture made? Will you give it to your children?

Perhaps we’re entering a new age of craftsmanship, one where we can see craft in the way a new business is devised, a sale is made or a website is coded. A craftsperson might be particularly talented and connected in the way she deals with clients, or be able to meet deadlines with alacrity.

Just because it’s not in a crafts fair doesn’t mean it didn’t demand craft.

Whatever you are, be a good one.

John Nese is the owner of Soda Pop Stop, a little “sweets” store in Los Angeles, California. He has spent his whole life obsessed with soda and loves sharing his passion with others. (He’s kind of the Gary Vaynerchuck of soda pop.) Ever heard of cucumber soda? Rose petal soda? He’s got it and he wants you to try it.

(Part of my “Craftsmanship” series.)

What I want to know is, what kind of soda would you make?

I’m not much of a motorcycle person, but there is such artistry in this guy’s work that I can’t help but be inspired.

Got any more good videos/photos I could feature?

Here’s a company who was tired of ketchup being something that barely resembles tomatoes anymore. Sir Kensington’s Gourmet Scooping Ketchup is free of gluten and sufites, contains no high-fructose corn syrup, and comes in 2 flavors. (found on uncrate)

My Favorite Materials

There are certain materials that I really like, including:

  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Leather
  • Glass
  • Stone (including concrete)
  • Natural fabrics (cotton, wool, etc.)

They go really well together, and are typically found in very well-made objects. I hope to build a home using primarily these materials someday.

(Note: I mentioned this to my wife, and she asked “Well what else is there?” So maybe I should clarify what materials I’m not a big fan of: drywall, plastic, stucco, painted metal, artificial fabrics, etc.)

Am I missing anything? What are your favorite materials?

From time to time, I come across a person or company that stands out as a shining example of craftsmanship. Bertelli is one of those companies. Their bicycles are 100% hand crafted. They avoid logos/decals. Their seats are made of leather and their handlebars are made of wood. They’re absolutely stunning.
